Unleashing your unique creativity?
What is your immediate reaction? Do you change the subject or perk up and pay attention?
Many people say “Oh, I’m not creative, I can’t even draw a straight line!”
But this belief is a misunderstanding of the nature of creativity.
Paintings, music, songs, poetry, photography, literature, scientific discoveries – these are all the outcome of hours, days, months even years of developing skills and talents.
Yet creativity is more than this.
Being creative is a process
Good news for those who imagine they aren’t creative. As Einstein said, “Creativity is intelligence having fun”.
It is the feeling, the spark, bringing something into existence that wasn’t there before.
We are all constantly creating: our thoughts, feelings and actions create results in our daily life, relationships and environment.
Do you like what you are creating?
It’s a journey of discovery
Every artist produces preparatory work that isn’t in the final result. We don’t see the “mistakes”. Thomas Edison discovered over 1000 ways not to make a light bulb before he succeeded.
What starts as an impulse or idea can take us on all kinds of creative journeys.
What do you enjoy doing? cooking, gardening, writing, using colour, dancing, singing?
These are all creative activities, involving your imagination, your senses and your body.
Let your creativity flow
Allow yourself to believe that you are creative.
Ideas to get started
Look around you for inspiration:
- beautiful scenery
- unusual objects
- a colour, shape, texture, sound
- something that makes you laugh.
How might you add that into your daily life?
- add a touch of new colour or texture to your home, outfit or office
- play music to make your toes tap…..
- cook and serve a meal that looks colourful and tasty.
Get a little notebook and pencil – carry it around with you:
- doodle in it
- jot down ideas
- cut or tear images from old magazines and paste them down to create something else.
No judging – no right/wrong; no should/shouldn’t!
Whatever you create is unique to you, so don’t compare yourself with others. No judging please – no right/wrong; no should/shouldn’t!
Sometimes creativity gets messy!
- break some rules
- colour outside the lines
- tear the paper
- turn things upside down or sideways.
Unleashing your creativity has many benefits including:
- Switching off and unwinding
- Reducing stress
- Increasing self confidence
- Inspiring new ideas at work
- Fun, pleasure, laughter
- Mundane tasks become easier
You might end up following a childhood dream or discovering that you have a hidden talent.
So, go on, start today, and unleash your unique creativity!
Once you get going there’ll be no stopping you.
Aim to do something creative for ten minutes a day, and see what happens.
Creativity is one of the “Stepping Stones” in our workshop “Your 7 Stepping Stones – get to where you want to be in 7 easy steps”.
Katrina Wood and I have developed this programme to support women who are juggling too many demands on their time and energy – and one of the things that goes to the bottom of the list for women is doing something creative for themselves.
